OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (12-6, 6-1) suffered its first conference loss of the season, 68-53, at No. 19 UW-Oshkosh (14-4, 4-3) on Wednesday night. The Titans ended the game on a 23-6 run following a 47-45 UWSP lead with just under nine minutes to go.
Junior
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) led the Pointers with 14 points, 10 of which came in the first half. He grabbed a team-high six boards with two assists and two steals. He went 0-for-2 at the free throw line, UWSP's only two attempts of the game.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) added 10 points with four rebounds and two assists.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) contributed eight points, all in the first half.
Dodge hit a three to get UWSP on the board and O'Heron followed with a bucket for a 5-2 lead.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) hit a three to break a 7-7 tie.
Midway through the half, O'Heron regained the lead for the Poitners at 18-17.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) followed with a three to extend the advantage. Later in the half, Dodge had a personal 5-0 run for UWSP as the Pointers led 32-29 at the half.
O'Heron and Fredrickson scored baskets early as the Pointers retained a small lead.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) hit a three just under five minute in for a 39-38 edge. He nailed another three to spark an 8-0 run after a 7-0 spurt by the Titans.
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) capped the run with a three-pointer as UWSP led 47-45. The Titans reeled off a 21-2 run over the next eight minutes to hand UWSP its first league setback.
The Pointers travel to La Crosse on Saturday (Jan. 27) to face the Eagles at 5:00 p.m. to open the second half of conference play.
