O’Heron’s Career-High Leads Pointers to Road Victory

LA CROSSE, Wis. – Junior Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) scored a career-best 26 points as the UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (13-6, 7-1) won 76-62 at UW-La Crosse (11-8-3-5) to open the second half of league play on Saturday.

O'Heron shot 11-for-14 from the field and made all three free throw attempts.  He added five rebounds with a block and a steal in the win.

Senior MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) and junior Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) poured in 18 apiece and combined for 7-of-12 shooting from behind the arc.

Dodge hit a jumper a minute and a half into the game to give UWSP a 4-3 lead and the Pointers did not trail the remainder of the game.  Delmore drained a three and O'Heron finished off the 7-0 run.  Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) and Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) each nailed a three-pointer as UWSP led 20-13 midway through the first half.

Threes continued to fall for the Pointers as Dodge, O'Heron and Delmore each hit from deep as UWSP took a 42-35 advantage into the half.

O'Heron got the second half started with an and-1.  Dodge followed with a three-pointer to up the lead to nine.  A 7-0 run by the Eagles cut the lead to two, but Nelson and O'Heron each scored to push it back to six.

Dodge hit back-to-back triples and he had a personal 8-0 run as the Pointers tried to shake the Eagles at the midpoint of the second half.  O'Heron scored five-straight points as UWSP took a 13-point lead.  The Pointers hit all four free throws in the final minute and a half as UWSP held UWL scoreless over the final 1:26 of the game.

The Pointers return home for back-to-back games against UW-Whitewater (Jan. 31) and UW-River Falls (Feb. 3).  Both games tip-off at 7:00 p.m. at Quandt Fieldhouse.
