STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (12-5, 6-0) rallied from a 10-point deficit in the second half to take down visiting UW-Platteville (14-3, 4-2) to remain unbeaten in WIAC play, 80-74, on Saturday night at Quandt Fieldhouse.
Junior
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) had a career-high 18 points. He snagged seven rebounds, dished out four assists and had two steals, one of which was key to closing out the win.
Senior
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) contributed 15 points.
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) added a career-high 12 and
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) had 10 for the Pointers.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) hit a three in the opening minute of the game and Delmore scored for a 5-2 lead. The teams traded buckets until Delmore drained a three to give UWSP a 16-12 lead. The Pioneers scored eight-straight, but UWSP responded with five-consecutive to retake the lead at 21-20.
With 5:15 remaining in the half, Koerner drained a wide-open three.
Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) got on the board and
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) hit four-straight free throws.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) scored four points in the closing minutes as UWSP trailed 37-34 at the half.
Five and a half minutes into the second half, the Pioneers completed an 8-0 run to put the Pointers down 10.
Garrett Nelson (Beaver Dam, Wis./Beaver Dam) hit a three and O'Heron cut the deficit to five. O'Heron capped a four-point spurt, but a UWP bucket gave the Pioneers a 56-50 lead.
O'Heron sparked a 9-0 run by the Pointers with a
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) triple turning the tide in favor of UWSP. With just under four minutes to go, the Pioneers took their final lead on a three. O'Heron made both free throws and gave the Pointers the lead for good with just under two to go.
O'Heron grabbed a pivotal steal with just over a minute to go. Fredrickson drained a clutch three in the final minute and UWSP hit 7-of-8 free throws to ice the game.
UWSP hits the road to close out the first half of conference play with a trip to UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday at 7:00 p.m.
