STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (7-9, 1-4)saw a four-point halftime lead dissolve as the visiting No. 14 UW-Whitewater Warhawks (14-2, 4-1) rallied for a 67-43 win over the Pointers on Wednesday.
Senior
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led the Pointers with nine points and tied for the team lead with five rebounds.
Freshman
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) tied a career-high with seven points. She pulled down a career-best four rebounds. Fellow freshman
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) dished out a career-high six assists.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) combined for five points as UWSP answered a 5-0 run by UWW. Leiterman scored four-straight UWSP points and Greenheck nailed a three as the Pointers edged ahead 12-10.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) drilled a three and
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) ended the quarter with a jumper as UWSP lead 21-16.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored four early points in the second quarter as the lead grew to eight. Leiterman got a tipin with 4:51 to go in the quarter and the Pointers' defense held for a 29-25 lead at the half.
Schmidt ended a six-minute drought with a bucket to give UWSP a 31-27 lead. The Warhawks scored eight-straight to take the lead for good. A Cerrato three kept the Pointers close with two and a half to go in the third, but a 6-2 run by UWW put the Pointers in a 45-38 hole.
Greenheck scored with 3:35 remaining to end a 17-0 run by the Warhawks to open the fourth.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) followed with a basket, but the deficit was too steep.
The Pointers head to UW-Platteville on Saturday for a 3:00 p.m. contest against the Pioneers. UWSP returns to Berg Gym next Wednesday (Jan. 24) to face UW-Oshkosh. The first 100 fans will receive a free t-shirt and fans will have a chance to win $500 at halftime.
