ANOKA, Minn. – The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team scored three goals in the third period to break out to a 5-1 victory over Saint John's on Saturday night at the Anoka Ice Center.
Sophomore defensemen
Drew McLean (Waterford, MI/) tallied his fifth goal of the season at 7:18 of the third period to give the Pointers (13-4-2) a 3-1 lead over Saint John's (10-4-2).
At 14:06 of the final stanza,
Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK/) tallied his team-leading 29
th point with
Colin Raver (Bartlett, IL/) and
Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa/) assisting on the play, giving the Pointers a three-goal advantage.
Just 19 seconds later, forward
Austin Kelly (Toledo, OH/) scored an empty-net goal while playing shorthanded to round out the UWSP scoring.
At 15:18 of the first period,
Brennen Miller (Keller, TX/) got the Pointers on the scoreboard, tallying the game's opening goal for the second consecutive night.
Early in the second period, Sam Valerious scored the lone Saint John's goal of the evening to tie the game at 1-1.
In the closing minutes of the middle period,
Luke McElhenie (Sauk City, WI/) gave the Pointers a 2-1 lead before the breakout third period.
Senior goaltender
Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI/) made 30 saves for the Pointers, including 12 in the third period alone.
The Pointers return to WIAC play next weekend, traveling to UW-Eau Claire on Friday (Jan. 19) before hosting UW-River Falls on Saturday (Jan. 20).
