Women’s Soccer Spurned by Overtime Tally at Macalester

ST. PAUL, Minn. – An overtime tally spoiled a strong outing by the UW-Stevens Point soccer team (2-2-0) in a 1-0 defeat on the road at Macalester (2-1-0) on Friday night.

Senior goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) made four of her seven saves in the first 24 minutes of play to keep the match scoreless.

Sophomore Amanda Maestas (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior High) was the first to test the Scots' goalkeeper with a shot on target in the 22nd minute.  Nora Hargett (Columbia, Mo./Hickman) fired one her team-high four shots in the 31st minute, but the scored remained knotted at 0-0 at the half.

Early in the second half, Gracie Wendels (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Assumption) and Maddy Hardyman (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) were thwarted in their attempts to give the Pointers a lead.  Towards the end of regulation, Maestas and Wendels again tested the Macalester keeper to no avail.

In the first overtime period, freshman Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) fired a pair of shots on frame.  Then in the closing seconds of the period, the Scots broke the scoreless tie with the lone goal of the match.

UWSP out-shot the Scots, 14-13, in the match.  Both team had eight shots on net.

The Pointers return home to face Illinois Institute of Technology in a 1:00 p.m. matchup on Sunday at the Point Soccer Bowl.
