CEDAR RAPIDS, Iowa – The No. 23 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (18-5) won both its matches at the Coe Triangular on Saturday. It took UWSP five sets to get past Carthage (12-4) in the first match of the day before the Pointers swept host-Coe College (9-12) to cap a 4-0 week.
Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) continued to be red-hot on the court. She recorded a double-double in both matches with a team-high in kills both matches. She had 22 against Carthage and had 15 more kills against Coe. Gehl added a career-high 21 digs in the win over Coe and had 14 digs versus Carthage.
Freshman
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) led UWSP in assists in both matches. She recorded 31 assists against Coe and had 33 against the Lady Reds. Sophomore
Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 28 assists against Carthage.
UWSP 3, Carthage 2 (25-20, 23-25, 25-21, 19-25, 15-11)
Senior
Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) had three early kills as UWSP jumped out to a 13-5 lead. Carthage responded to close within two, but
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and Gehl each had a kill to start three-point runs en route to the victory in set one.
Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) had a pair of kills in a 4-1 run to break an 11-all tie in set two. Later in the set, Emme added a trio of kills, but Carthage sealed the set with the final four points.
Three Gehl kills were the lone points in an early 7-3 deficit in the third set. Gehl added six more kills in the set and
Maddie Courter (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) finished off the set win with a kill.
The fourth set was close throughout until a late four-point spurt by Carthage to send the match to a decisive fifth set.
Gehl and Courter had consecutive kills to give UWSP its first lead in the fifth set. Following a 10-8 deficit, Gehl started a five-point run that was aided by a
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) ace. Wirkus and Gehl finished the match with back-to-back kills.
UWSP 3, Coe 0 (25-19, 25-18, 25-14)
In a 15-12 hole, the Pointers got kills by Emme, Wirkus and Magliano followed by an ace from
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) to jump ahead by one. Then a seven-point run with four kills from Gehl and two aces by Kundinger all-but sealed the set.
Wirkus served up an ace as Coe committed four early errors for a 5-1 UWSP lead. Gehl got the Pointers rolling again with three kills in a 9-2 run. Gehl had a kill and an ace late and Wirkus finished the set with a kill.
UWSP used an 8-1 run in the middle of the third set to separate from Coe. Emme and Wirkus sprinkled a kill apiece among seven Coe errors as the Pointers cruised to the sweep.
The Pointers head to Mequon on Wednesday to face Concordia at 7:00 p.m.
