MEQUON, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point Volleyball team (18-6) stumbled in non-conference action on Wednesday night, falling in straight sets to Concordia (18-2).
Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) picked up her seventh double-double in the last eight matches with 10 kills and 10 digs.
Senior
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) picked up double-figure digs again, her 23rd time on the season. She had 16 in the match.
Freshman
Ellie Adams (Racine, Wis./William Horlick) recorded a match-high 23 assists, her fourth-straight match with 20 or more assists.
Gehl had a pair of early kills as the Pointers jumped ahead 5-3 in the first set. A 7-1 run tipped the set in favor of the home team, 10-6. Later, UWSP avoided set point four-straight times with three kills and a CUW error before dropping the opening set.
The Pointers found themselves in a hole in the second set despite three early kills by Gehl. A 5-0 run including kills by
Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders),
Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) and two by
Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) put UWSP ahead 10-9. Then after a 19-19 tie, CUW rattled off the final six points to take the second set.
The Falcons put together a five-point run in the third set to put UWSP at a 10-4 deficit. A couple three-point bursts late in the set helped UWSP stay close, but CUW finished the match in straight sets.
UWSP heads to Eau Claire on Friday to face a pair of non-conference foes. The Pointers play Martin Luther at 5:00 p.m. before clashing with Augsburg at 7:00 p.m.
