Pointers Stifled in Conference-Opening Loss

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-1, 0-1) couldn't muster any momentum offensively in a 35-13 defeat to visiting UW-La Crosse (4-0, 1-0) in the Pink Game on Saturday.  The Pink Game for Cancer raised over $50,000 for the Joanne A. Suomi Memorial Fund and the Breast Cancer Family Foundation.

UWSP's defense accounted for all 13 points with senior Blake Lehman (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) returning an interception for a touchdown and junior Juleyan Givens (Bolingbrook, Ill./Plainfield East) picked up a fumbles and took it 68 yards to the end zone.

Junior quarterback Cooper Kerner (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) completed four of his eight passes for 84 yards.  Starter Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) threw the only other completions as UWSP had only 87 yards through the air.

Freshman Zach Bosek (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich Community) had 12 rushes for 63 yards to lead the UWSP ground attack.  ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) and Urmanski added 26 and 23 yards, respectively, but the Pointers were held to just 88 net yards rushing.

Neither team could get going early in the game, but that all changed following a UWSP fumble deep in its own territory.  UWL cashed in on the miscue, but needed six plays and a penalty to reach the end zone.

On the Eagles' next drive, it took UWL just five plays to go 60 yards to put the Pointers in a 13-0 hole.  After a three-and-out by the Pointers, UWL got back in the end zone four plays later.

In the middle of the second quarter, Bosek and Urmanski gained 39 yards on the ground over three plays to give the offense some life.  But a costly penalty halted the momentum and UWSP's punter Alex Malueg (Green Bay, Wis./Bay Port) pinned the Eagles deep with is third punt inside the 20.

The Eagles were unfazed and drove 94 yards to put the Pointers down 28-0 at the half.

UWSP turned to Kerner under center to open the second half, but another three-and-out gave the ball back to UWL. The Eagles took 14 plays to drive down the field and increased the UWSP hole to 35-0.

The Pointers finally got on the board in the next UWL possession.  Lehman jumped an out route and took the interception 46 yards to the end zone.

Early in the fourth quarter, the Pointers defense again scored points.  Givens scooped up a fumble he forced on a sack and ran it 68 yards for a touchdown.

The Eagles milked the final 7:52 with a 13-play drive to end the game.

UWSP heads to UW-Oshkosh next Saturday (Oct. 7) for a 1:30 p.m. kickoff against the Titans.
