OSHKOSH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point football team (3-2, 0-2) gave up a touchdown on the first play from scrimmage and could not recover in a 49-14 defeat at No. 3 UW-Oshkosh (4-0, 2-0) on Saturday.
Junior quarterback
Cooper Kerner (Eagle River, Wis./Northland Pines) started for the Pointers and completed four passes for 108 yards. His primary target, senior
Jerry Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Watertown), caught three passes for 93 yards.
Freshman
Zach Bosek (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich Community) carried the ball 12 times for 72 yards. Kerner also carried the ball 12 times and scored a touchdown on the ground.
Fellow freshman
Jahi Stigall (Chicago, Ill./DePaul College Prep) also scored for UWSP racking up 50 yards on four rushing attempts.
The Titans struck early with a 64-yard touchdown on the first play from scrimmage. UWO doubled its lead on the next possession with a seven-play, 76-yard drive.
UWSP got the offense in gear late in the first quarter. Kerner hooked up with Williams for a 46-yard gain on the final play of the period. After three rushes by Bosek,
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) gained 17 yards to set the Pointers up with first and goal at the six. Two plays later, Kerner's pass was deflected and picked off in the end zone.
The Titans drove the distance of the field for a 21-0 lead. UWO would find the end zone on the next two drives to take a 35-0 lead at the half.
On the Pointers' second drive of the second half, Kerner and Bosek moved the ball into UWO territory. With UWSP in field-goal range, a penalty and a pair of short rushes set up third and 16. Kerner fired to the sideline, but the throw sailed for his second interception of the game.
UWO turned the takeaway into a touchdown six plays later. The Titans then concluded their offensive scoring on the first possession of the fourth quarter to push the score to 49-0.
UWSP started its fourth quarter with a 35-yard completion to Williams. Another completion to Williams landed the Pointers deep in Titans' territory. Three plays later, Kerner reached the end zone on a five-yard rush to get UWSP on the board.
On the next UWSP drive, Stigall spun out of a pileup in the middle of the field and rumbled for 48 yards to the UWO one-yard line. Stigall punched it in on the next play, his first career touchdown.
The Pointers return home for Homecoming next Saturday with a 1:00 p.m. kickoff against UW-Eau Claire.
