STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (1-1-0) got goals from five different players in a massive 6-0 victory over St. Norbert (1-1-0) in the home opener on Sunday. The six goals match a season-high from last season when UWSP put six goals in the net against Lawrence.
Sophomore
Maddy Hardyman (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing) got the scoring started in the 17th minute. Her first of the year proved to be the game-winner. She out-muscled the St. Norbert defense to get to a loose ball in the box. Freshman
Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) and sophomore
Amanda Maestas (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior High) assisted on the goal.
In the 32nd minute, freshman
Meaghan Ambelang (Stuttgart, Germany/) found the back of the net at the back post off of a corner kick. It was her first career goal and was assisted by sophomore
Kayla Huber (Wausau, Wis./D.C. Everest).
Early in the second half, freshman
Gracie Wendels (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Assumption) scored her first career goal. The unassisted tally came from the top of the box and was drilled low into the back corner.
In the 65th minute, Wendels scored again. She found herself wide open at the back post after a cross by
Olivia Bohnert (Oshkosh, Wis./Fox Valley Lutheran) fell off the fingertip of the goalkeeper to her awaiting foot.
Another freshman
Alexis Petersen (Crystal Lake, Ill./Prairie Ridge) also notched her first career goal. She lasered a clearance attempt into the upper 90 from about 35 yards out to push the UWSP advantage to 5-0.
In the final minute of the match, Maestas scored her first of the year with Wendels picking up the assist to complete her five-point game.
Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) made five saves, all in the first half, for her first shutout of the year.
The Pointers return to the pitch on Tuesday for a home tilt against Crown College at 4:00 p.m. at the Point Soccer Bowl.
