PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – The No. 23 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (16-5, 2-1) picked up another conference victory with a sweep at UW-Platteville (9-9, 0-3) on Friday night by set scores of 25-20, 25-15, 25-13.
Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) picked up her fourth double-double in five matches with a game-high 12 kills. She added 11 digs in the win.
Senior
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) contributed 10 digs, her 20th double figure total in a match this season. Sophomore
Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had a team-high 22 assists for UWSP.
The Pointers reeled off a four-point run started with a Gehl kill with a service ace by Gehl in the run to take an 8-4 lead in the first set. The home side put an 8-1 run together to put UWSP in a 15-12 hole. Later in the set, a pair of
Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) kills among a litany of errors by the Pioneers gave the Pointers the opening set.
Gehl and
Maddie Courter (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) each had a kill in a 5-0 run to put the Pointers ahead 6-2 early in the second set. Back-to-back kills by Wirkus and Gehl put the Pointers up by 10, 18-8. Courter ended the set with another kill to quash any hope of a UWP rally.
Kills by seniors Wirkus and
Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) helped UWSP double up the Pioneers, 10-5, in the third set. Aces by
Lisa Bedessem (Burlington, Wis./Sauk Prairie) and Wirkus helped seal the set and match victory.
The Pointers head to Iowa for a pair of matches on Saturday at the Coe Triangular. UWSP will face Carthage at 1:00 before playing host Coe at 3:00 p.m.
