Gehl Propels the Pointers Past Stout in Home Sweep

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) narrowly missed her fourth-consecutive double-double and led all players with 15 kills as the No. 23 UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (15-5, 1-1) swept visiting UW-Stout (5-11, 1-1) on Wednesday night.

Gehl added nine digs, had a pair of blocks and recorded an ace in the Pointers' win.  Fellow sophomore Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had 30 assist for UWSP, her third 30-assist match of the season.

In the first set, Gehl had an early kill and an ace as the Pointers jumped out to a 7-2 lead.  Later in the set, senior Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) had back-to-back kills to up the lead to 20-11.  Gehl finished off the set victory with her fourth kill of the match.

The second set started much like the first.  Tara Emme (St. Nazianz, Wis./Valders) and Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) registered consecutive kills in a four-point run as the Pointers went up 8-3 early.  After a brief rally by the Blue Devils closed the gap to two points, UWSP reeled off eight-straight to take an 18-8 lead.  Wirkus and Maddie Courter (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) accounted for three late kills as the Pointers finished the set with a 5-0 run.

Gehl recorded consecutive kills as UWSP again jumped in front, 7-2, early in the third set.  A mid-set run by UW-Stout gave the visitors a brief one-point edge.  Gehl rattled off a trio of kills and earned four of the next five points as UWSP regained control.  Following an 18-17 lead by the Pointers, UWSP closed the match out with seven of the final eight points.

The win over UW-Stout marks the Pointers' 11th win this season via sweep.  It is also UWSP's fifth consecutive sweep of the Blue Devils dating back to 2012, the last time the Pointers lost a set to UW-Stout.

UWSP head to UW-Platteville on Friday to continue conference play.  The match against the Pioneers begins at 7:00 p.m.
