STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Steve Herra (Rockford, Ill./Boylan) caught two touchdown passes and threw for another as the UW-Stevens Point Football team (3-0) remained unbeaten with a 41-28 win over visiting Adrian (1-2) in the Spud Bowl on Saturday.
Senior
Jerry Williams (Milwaukee, Wis./Watertown) was on the receiving end of the Herra's toss and totaled three touchdown catches on the day. Williams and Herra each made four catches to lead UWSP.
Sophomore
Matt Urmanski (Edgar, Wis./Edgar) took a majority of the snaps under center after senior
Ryan Swigart (Winnebago, Ill./Winnebago) left with an injury. Urmanski completed 13 of 22 passes for 153 yards and four touchdowns.
UWSP's ground game rumbled through the Bulldogs' defense at a clip of 5.8 yards per carry. Freshman
Zach Bosek (Sandwich, Ill./Sandwich Community) did most of the damage with 132 yards on 27 carries. Fellow freshman
ShamaJ Williams (Racine, Wis./Lutheran) picked up 56 yards on seven rushes.
The Pointers got on the board in their first offensive possession. Bosek and
Evan Dux (Combined Locks, Wis./Kimberly) chewed up 47 yards on the ground and Swigart capped the drive with a 38-yard touchdown throw to Herra.
Adrian drove 75 yards on the ensuing drive for a game-tying touchdown. UWSP had the Bulldogs stopped, but a costly penalty on fourth down extended the drive.
UWSP went to its bag of trick on the first play of the next drive. Swigart handed to Dux on what looked like a usual sweep to the right. But Dux handed to Herra on a reverse and Herra pulled up to toss to Williams, who was wide open and scampered 75 yards to put the Pointers back in front.
The Bulldogs countered with a two-play, 73-yard drive to tie the game again at 14-14.
An offense-fill first quarter continued with the Pointers methodically moving down the field. Bosek recorded 26 yards over two plays and Urmanski finished the drive with a 17-yard completion to Herra as the quarter expired.
In the middle of the second quarter, Urmanski completed a pair of passes, including a 33-yard connection with Williams, to double the lead to 28-14.
Adrian responded with a five-play drive that spanned 64 yards to close the score to 28-21 at the half.
The Pointes were driving as the third quarter elapsed. The fourth quarter began with UWSP at first and goal from the five yard line. Three plays later, Williams scooped up a deflected pass to put the Pointers ahead by two scores.
On the next UWSP drive, Urmanski and Williams connected for 11 yards on a fourth-down play to keep the drive alive. Urmanski hit
Dylon Iverson (Sturgeon Bay, Wis./Sevastopol) on an eight-yard strike to cap a 13-play scoring drive and give the Pointers a 41-21 lead.
The Bulldogs scored a touchdown on the next drive, but it was too little too late as the Pointers improved to 3-0 on the year.
UWSP will begin conference play at home next Saturday (Sept. 30) with a 6:00 p.m. kickoff at Goerke Park against UW-La Crosse. The game versus the Eagles will be the annual Pink Game. Among the events surrounding the Pink Game will be a silent auction, t-shirt sales and much more all to benefit the Joanne A. Suomi Memorial Fund and the Breast Cancer Family Foundation.
