ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (3-1) hit its stride with a pair of sweeps on the final day of the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational. The Pointers beat St. Scholastica in the morning match and completed the weekend on a high note with a sweep of Loras in the afternoon.
Sophomore
April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) delivered double figure kills in both matches. Senior
Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) and
Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) each had a double-digit kills match on the day, Wirkus versus CSS and Magliano against Loras. On the day, the Pointers hit .300 or better in three different sets.
Senior
Delaney McCreary (West Bend, Wis./East) and sophomore
Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) had double figure assists each in both matches. Senior
Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) racked up 39 digs on the day.
UWSP 3, St. Scholastica 0 (25-18, 25-15, 25-17)
The Pointers began the match with kills by Magliano and Gehl and jumped ahead 3-0 with an ace by Kundinger. Later in the set, a pair of aces by Wirkus pushed the lead to 11-3. Sophomore Jamie Schmidt closed out the set with two kills in the final three points.
Wirkus struck for four kills in a seven-point run to give UWSP a 13-7 edge in set two. Later in the set, Magliano buried three kills to push the lead to 19-9. Wirkus ended the set with a kill and an assisted block.
The Pointers trailed early in set three, but a four-point spurt aided by a
Shannah Carter (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) ace propelled UWSP in front. A mid-set run by the Saints tied the set at 12-12, but the Pointers rallied for six of the next seven points to put away the match.
UWSP 3, Loras 0 (25-14, 25-15, 25-18)
Senior
Danielle Coleman (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) recorded three early kills as the Pointers jumped out to an 11-6 lead. UWSP seized the momentum from there and cruised to an opening-set victory.
Wirkus had a pair of kills and
Maddie Courter (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) recorded an ace as part of a 7-0 run in set two. The Pointers had little trouble winning the set and held Loras to a .000 hitting percentage.
Gehl buried three early kills as UWSP took a 6-1 edge in the third set. Magliano took over with five kills, including the match-ender, over the rest of the set as UWSP won every set on the day.
Gehl and Kundinger were named to the Kathryne Pals Legacy Invitational All-Tournament team for their play in the weekend's action.
The Pointers travel to Lakeland on Wednesday before hosting the UW-Stevens Point Invitational next weekend.
