Volleyball Takes Care of Lakeland in Straight Sets

PLYMOUTH, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point volleyball team (4-1) continued to roll with a straight-set victory at Lakeland (2-3) on Wednesday night.  The win gives UWSP a three-match win streak, all via straight-set sweep.

Sophomore April Gehl (Hilbert, Wis./Hilbert) led the Pointers with 12 kills, the lone player for either team in double figures.

Senior Kendra Kundinger (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale) led all players with 29 digs in the match.  Fellow senior Morgan Wirkus (Marathon, Wis./Marathon) and junior Shannah Carter (Prior Lake, Minn./Prior Lake) were also in double digits at 16 and 15 digs, respectively.

Senior Delaney McCreary (West Bend, Wis./East) had a game-high 15 assists while sophomore Abby Majercik (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg) added 14.

Following three-consecutive kills by the Pointers, the host Muskies reeled off five straight points to take a 6-3 lead early in the first set.  Gehl and senior Danielle Coleman (Rockford, Ill./Keith Country Day) buried four kills in the span of six points as UWSP regained the lead at 9-8.  Later in the set, Gehl got the Pointers to set point with another kill and UWSP finished the set two points later.

A couple of mid set kills by Kelly Magliano (Chicago, Ill./Mount Assisi Academy) provided some cushion in the second set.  The Pointers held Lakeland to a -.115 hitting percentage in a comfortable second set win.

The Pointers had five kills among their first six points of the third set to jump in front early, 6-2.  Sophomore Maddie Courter (Geneva, Ill./Geneva) added a pair of service aces and buried a kill to set up match point.  Coleman finished the sweep off with her ninth kill of the match on the next point.

UWSP returns home to host the UW-Stevens Point Invitational on Friday and Saturday.  The Pointers begin the weekend against Ripon and Bethel on Friday at 3:00 and 7:00 p.m., respectively.  UWSP will face No. 20 Gustavus Adolphus and No. 12 Millikin on Saturday.
