Another Clean Sheet Propels Pointers to Victory

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (5-2-0) recorded its fifth shutout of the season in a 3-0 victory over Ripon (6-1-0) on Sunday.  The Pointers handed the Red Hawks their first defeat of the year.  UWSP ran its season-opening home shutout streak to 360 minutes and have not allowed a goal against in the last 270 minute of play.

Freshman Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) got the Pointers on the board early in the first half.  She scored her team-high sixth of the year in the 13th minute on an assist from Maddy Hardyman (Red Wing, Minn./Red Wing).

The score remained 1-0 in favor of UWSP well into the second half.  Hardyman added to the lead in the 72nd minute on a free kick from about 30 yards that she struck over Ripon's wall.  It was her fifth goal of the season.

In the 81st minute, sophomore Amanda Maestas (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior High) beat the defender to the ball and stuck a tough-angle shot off the back post to increase the advantage to 3-0.  Her fourth of the year was assisted by freshman Gracie Wendels (Wisconsin Rapids, Wis./Assumption).

The Pointers outshot the Red Hawks, 23-6, in the match.  Senior goalkeeper Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) made four saves to earn her third complete-game shutout of the year.

UWSP remains at home with a tilt against Carroll University on Wednesday (Sept. 20) at 4:00 p.m. at the Pont Soccer Bowl.
