ST. PAUL, Minn. – The UW-Stevens Point women's soccer team (0-1-0) saw its strong defensive effort spoiled late in a season-opening 1-0 defeat at St. Thomas (1-0-0) on Friday afternoon. The Tommies scored on a wind-aided corner kick for the lone goal of the match.
Senior goalkeeper
Sarah Peplinski (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) started and played all 90 minutes. She made nine saves before the decisive goal found the net in the 86th minute.
Freshman forward
Francesca Hamilton (Milwaukee, Wis./St. Thomas More) had a solid debut for the Pointers. She registered one of the two shots in the match for UWSP. She played all 90 minutes in her collegiate debut.
Sophomore
Amanda Maestas (Plano, Texas/Plano Senior High) recorded the other Pointers' shot, both of which came in the first half.
St. Thomas had 20 shots and all 14 corner kicks in the match. The final corner resulted in the goal, which curled into the net directly off the corner kick.
The Pointers return home to face St. Norbert on Sunday at 1:00 p.m. at the Point Soccer Bowl. Admission to all UWSP home women's soccer matches is free.
