Walk-Off Caps Senior Day Sweep for Baseball

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Sophomore Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) hit a walk-off double in the bottom of the ninth inning to cap a sweep by the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (18-16, 11-9) over visiting UW-Stout (10-27, 6-14) on Senior Day at University Field.  UWSP won game one, 4-1, before completing the sweep on Stanicek's walk-off, 5-4, in game two.
 
Stanicek had four hits on the day, including a home run.  He drove in two runs and scored four times over the doubleheader.  He also drew a pair of walks.
 
Freshman John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) registered three hits in each game on Saturday.  He drove in a run and scored three times. 
 
Senior Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) had three hits in his final home doubleheader.  He stole a base in game two, his league-leading 27th of the year.
 
Fellow senior Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) had three RBI on Saturday, all three on successful squeeze bunts.
 
Game 1 – UWSP 4, Stout 1
Stanicek began the bottom of the second with a walk.  He scored from first on a double by Popham to put UWSP ahead.  A fielder's choice allowed the second run of frame to score for the Pointers.
 
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) singled with one down in the third.  He moved to second on a passed ball and to third on a balk, but remained there as the inning ended.
 
Gerber legged out his first triple of the season with one away in the fifth.  Two quick outs left him at third to end the inning.
 
Stanicek singled to start the sixth.  Popham followed with a single that sent Stanicek to third.  Rose dropped a squeeze to up the UWSP lead to 3-0.  Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) followed with a run-scoring double.
 
In the seventh, UW-Stout got on the board.  A leadoff hit by pitch moved to third on a single.  A fielder's choice put the lone run of the game on the board.
 
Senior Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) threw 8.0 in his final home start.  He struck out five and scattered five hits.  Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) struck out three in the ninth to earn his third save of the season.
 
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Stout 4
Gerber singled down the left field line to lead off game two.  Two batters later, Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) singled to put aboard, but UWSP could not take the early lead.
 
The Blue Devils converted a leadoff double in the fourth into the first run of the game.
 
Stanicek singled with one out in the bottom of the fourth.  Popham singled also to send Stanicek to third.  Rose followed with another successful squeeze to tie the game at 1-1.
In the fifth, UW-Stout used three walks and a hit to take a 2-1 lead.
 
Stanicek led off the sixth with a solo home run to right, his fourth long ball of the year.  Popham singled and stole second.  Then with two out, Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) singled to put UWSP ahead.  Senior Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) followed with a double to put the Pointers up 4-2.
 
The lead remained until the ninth.  Three hits and a sacrifice fly tied the game at 4-4.
 
Gerber singled to begin the bottom of the ninth.  He stole second and moved to third on a ground out.  A fielder's choice erased the winning run at the plate, but after a wild pitch, Mrozinski moved to second with two away.  Stanicek hit a double over the centerfielder's head to push home the walk-off run.
 
Pointers head to Marian on Tuesday to make up a postponed doubleheader.  First pitch is slated for 5:00 p.m.
