STEVENS POINT, Wis. – For the second-straight day, the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (9-9, 2-2) got a stellar pitching performance in game one against vising UW-Oshkosh (10-10, 2-2). Senior
Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) threw a complete-game four-hit shutout as the Pointers downed the Titans, 4-0, in game one. In game two, UWSP fought back from an early deficit before falling in 11 innings, 11-6.
Kawlewski pitched the Pointers second shutout of the weekend in a complete game effort in Sunday's opener. He scattered four hits and struck out a season-high six batters.
Sophomore
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) continued to rip the cover off the ball, collecting a pair of hits in each game of Sunday's doubleheader. In game one, he hit his team-best fourth homer of the year and scored twice. He added a double, walk and scored a run in game two. Mrozinski's offensive tear includes multiple hits in the eight of the last nine games.
Senior
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) added a vital hit in each game. He drove in an insurance run in game one. In game two, he hit a bases-clearing double and later scored in a game-tying frame.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWO 0
Mrozinski opened the scoring with a first-pitch solo home run with one away in the fourth inning.
The Pointers scored another run in the fifth inning thanks to three errors by the Titans.
Mrozinski singled to begin the sixth inning.
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) put down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw to first sailed into the right field corner sending Iloncaie to third and Mrozinski across the plate. Later in the inning, Thomka reached on an infield single to plate the fourth run of the game.
Kawlewski allowed just one runner to reach third in the game and only had two runners aboard in three frames.
Game 2 – UWSP 6, UWO 11 (11 inn.)
Starting pitcher
Ben Miller (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) struck out the first two batters of game two, but a two-out walk opened the door for a big inning. Three hits later, capped by a two-run home run, put the Titans up 4-0.
Mrozinski drew a leadoff walk in the fourth inning to begin the comeback. Two batters later,
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) also walked and
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) was hit with a pitch to load the bases. Thomka stepped in and drilled a double into the left field corner to clear the bases.
Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) followed with a single up the middle to tie the game at 4-4.
In the fifth inning,
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) received a one-out base on balls. Two batters later, Iloncaie hit his first career home run to put the Pointers in front, 6-4.
The Titans got a run back on a pair of hits in the sixth inning. UW-Oshkosh tied the game in the eighth with two more hits.
Neither team could muster another run and the game went to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, a leadoff double sparked a five-run frame by the Titans and the teams split the four game series.
The Pointers head to UW-Platteville for a pair of doubleheaders on Thursday and Friday beginning at 1:00 and 12:00 p.m., respectively. UWSP returns home on Monday, April 17 with a DH against St. Norbert to open an eight-game home stand.
