STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Junior
Cole Erickson (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) tossed eight scoreless innings to power the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (8-8, 1-1) to a conference-opening 4-0 win over UW-Oshkosh (9-9, 1-1) on Saturday. The Titans rebounded for an 8-2 win over the Pointers in game two.
Sophomore catcher
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) picked up a pair of hits in each game for the Pointers. He now has racked up multiple hits in six of the last seven games played. He drove in three in the game one victory.
Seniors
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) and
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) each scored twice in game one. Rose singled in each game. Freshmen
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) recorded a hit apiece in both games.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, UWO 0
Gerber was hit by a pitch with one down in the third inning. He stole second and scored on a Mrozinski single to center to give UWSP a 1-0 lead.
In the bottom of the sixth, the Pointers took advantage of two UWO errors. Gerber reached on the first miscue to begin the frame. Rose dropped a sacrifice bunt, but the throw went to the right field corner to plate the first run and put Rose at third. Mrozinski flew to left to push the UWSP lead to 3-0.
Rose singled with two away in the eighth. He stole second and scored on Mrozinski's second single of the game to put UWSP up 4-0.
Erickson struck out five in the win. He escaped a bases-loaded jam in the eighth to preserve the shutout. Reliever
Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) tossed a scoreless ninth to lock up the win.
Game 2 – UWSP 2, UWO 8
Stanicek drew a walk to begin the second inning. He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt by Popham and scored on a pair of wild pitches.
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) doubled with two away and scored on a Duddleston two-bagger.
The Titans put up a four-spot in the third inning on just one base hit. Three walks, a hit batter and two UWSP errors contributed to the four-run inning.
In the fourth, UWO scored twice on a walk and a two-run home run. The Titans added two more in the fifth on four-consecutive walks and a UWSP error.
Stanicek began a rally in the ninth with a leadoff double. He moved to second on a Popham single, but both runners were stranded to end the game.
The Pointers and Titans will close out the weekend with a doubleheader on Sunday beginning at 12:00 p.m. at University Field.
