LA CROSSE, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (16-16, 8-8) gave up a huge first inning in game one and could not fully recover in a sweep at the hands of UW-La Crosse (20-14, 8-8) on Saturday. The Pointers continued to chip away, but fell in the opener, 11-7. In game two, UWSP battled to a 2-1 defeat.
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) continued his big weekend in La Crosse with two more hits in game one. He drove in five runs on a pair of two-run singles and a sac fly.
Senior
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) went 4-for-4 in game one and scored four runs. Fellow senior
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three hits on the day and scored twice.
Game 1 – UWSP 7, UWL 11
Gerber led off the game with a single and moved to second on a wild pitch. After a
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) walk, both runners moved into scoring position on another wild pitch. Mrozinski followed with a single to drive both runners in.
In the bottom of the first, the wheels fell off as UWL sent 17 batters to the plate and plated 11 runs.
Thomka and Gerber drew back-to-back walks to begin the fourth.
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) singled to push home a run. Two batters later, Mrozinski drove in another on a sac fly to pull UWSP within 11-4.
Gerber began the sixth with a single to center. He stole second and third, scoring on a throwing error.
Thomka and Gerber each singled to begin the eighth. Both moved up on a groundout and Mrozinski plated both with another single, but the Pointers couldn't get any closer.
Relief pitcher
Ben Miller (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) pitched the final 7.1 innings. He allowed just one hit and struck out two.
Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWL 2
The Eagles got on the board first in the bottom of the third. Two hits and two opportunistic groundouts led to a run.
In the seventh, Stanicek tripled with two away. He scored on a wild pitch to tie the game at 1-1.
The tie didn't last long. In the bottom of the seventh, a leadoff hit by pitch came around to score on a sac bunt, wild pitch and a base hit.
Senior
Chris Hetzel (Oshkosh, Wis./Lourdes) went the distance for UWSP. He struck out two and scattered seven hits.
The Pointers head to Marian on Tuesday to make-up a rained out doubleheader at 3:00 p.m. in Fond du Lac.
