Thomka’s Bases-Clearing Double Powers Pointers Past Warhawks

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Senior Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) hit a bases-clearing double in the bottom of the eighth inning as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (15-13, 7-5) knocked off No. 3 UW-Whitewater (23-5, 10-2) for the second-straight day.  Thomka's three-RBI hit gave UWSP a 6-3 win in game one.  In game two, a late UWW home run spoiled the Pointers' sweep attempt, 10-7.

Thomka had a pair of hits in the game one win.  He drove in three and scored another run.  He added another base hit in game two.

Freshman John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) had five hits on the day including a career-high four hits in game two.  He also drew a walk and scored three times on the day.

William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) each registered a base hit in both games.  Carlson walked twice on the day and scored a run.  Iloncaie scored two runs in game two.

Game 1 – UWSP 6, UWW 3
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) drew a leadoff walk in the bottom of the third inning.  He moved to second on a sacrifice bunt and to third on a productive groundout.  Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) then put the UWSP in front with a base hit up the middle.

In the top of the fifth, the Warhawks turned two hits into a run to tie the game.

The Pointers got a leadoff single in the bottom of the frame from Thomka.  Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) was hit by a pitch and both runners moved into scoring position on a sac bunt.  A run-scoring groundout put UWSP back in front.

UWW hit a leadoff home run in the seventh to re-tie the game at 2-2.  The Warhawks hit another solo home run in the eighth to take a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth, a one-out error opened the door for the Pointers' rally.  A wild pitch moved the runner to second.  Popham walked and Carlson singled to load the bases.  A squeeze bunt was perfectly executed by Duddleston to tie the game as the bases remained loaded.  That's when Thomka's heroics put UWSP ahead on his three-run double.

Relief pitcher Nathan Mulzer closed out the win striking out the side in the ninth.  Starter Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) threw seven strong innings with eight strikeouts.

Game 2 – UWSP 7, UWW 10
The Warhawks got on the board in the first inning on three hits and a sacrifice fly to take an early 2-0 lead.

UWW doubled the Pointers' deficit with two more runs in the second inning.  Four singles plated two runs for the visitors.

In the bottom of the second, the Pointers chipped away.  Iloncaie singled to begin the inning.  Popham singled and Carlson was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) drew a walk to push home a run.  Then with two away, Gerber was hit by a pitch to plate another run.

The Warhawks added two more runs in the third to keep the pressure on.  Three hits and two UWSP miscues contributed to the inning.

Iloncaie walked to begin the sixth inning for UWSP.  Singles by Popham and Carlson loaded the bases.  Stanicek drove in a run when he was plunked.  Duddleston continued the rally with a bunt single.  Two batters later, Gerber reached on an infield single to pull UWSP within one.  Rose followed and hit a higher chopper in front of the plate, but the throw home was errant allowing two runs to score and give UWSP a 7-6 advantage.

The Pointers held the one-run lead until the eighth.  UWW loaded the bases with two away and a grand slam put the Warhawks in front for good.

UWSP closes out the eight-game home stand on Wednesday with a 1:00 p.m. non-conference doubleheader against St. Scholastica.
