Softball Unable to Contain No. 15 Blugolds

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (8-20, 1-9) dropped both games of a home doubleheader to No. 15 UW-Eau Claire (21-7, 4-4) on Saturday.  UWSP fell in game one, 9-1, before an 11-1 run-rule loss in game two.

Sophomore Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) had a pair of hits, including a two-run home run, in game one.  Senior Cori Semler had two hits in game one as well and drove in the run in game two.

Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) hit two singles in game one.  Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) had a hit and drew a walk in game two.

Game 1 – UWSP 2, UWEC 9
The Blugolds got on the board on a RBI ground out in the second inning.  UWEC added four runs in the fourth on a trio of hits, two walks and an error.

In the fifth, Semler singled for the second time in the game with one down.  Johnson singled two pitches later and a UWEC error loaded the bases, but consecutive outs ended the threat.

After the Blugolds plated four more runs in the sixth, Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) led off with a walk in the bottom of the frame.  Mix worked the count full and fouled off three-straight pitches before a line drive two-run home run, the first of her career, got the Pointers on the board.

Game 2 – UWSP 1, UWEC 11 (5 inn.)
Three-straight batters reached to begin the second and the Blugolds turned that into a seven-run inning.  A pair of two-out doubles pushed across four of the runs.

Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) singled to begin the bottom of the second.  Allen walked and two batters later, Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.I. Case) drew a walk to load the bases.  Semler drove in a run with a grounder to first that was booted, but the Pointers couldn't further continue the rally.

The Blugolds scored four times on five hits in the fourth inning to put the game out of reach.

The Pointers begin a busy final week of the regular season with a twin bill at St. Norbert on Tuesday at 3:00 p.m.  UWSP will return home for the final home games of the year with a 2:00 p.m. doubleheader against UW-Oshkosh on Wednesday.
