PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Even three lightning delays couldn't cool the UW-Stevens Point baseball team's bat on Friday as the Pointers (12-10, 5-3) put up 27 runs in a doubleheader sweep at UW-Platteville (17-10, 2-6). UWSP hit three home runs in the opener, a convincing 18-3 win. In game two, the Pointers had 13 more hits in a 9-1 win.
Freshman
Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) went 4-for-5 in each game of the doubleheader. In game one, he hit his first career home run and was a triple shy of the cycle. He drove in five runs and scored three times on the day.
Sophomore
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had five hits on the day, including his team-leading fourth home run of the year. He had seven RBI on the day, including a career-high five runs batted in in game one.
The big offensive day saw every starter in game get at least one hit.
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) scored four times in game one and five runs on the day.
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three RBI and three runs scored on the day.
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy),
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) and
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) all had multiple runs scored and multiple RBI over the twin bill.
Game 1 – UWSP 18, UWP 3
UWSP put up three runs in the top of the first on just one hit. Gerber and Rose drew back-to-back walks to open the game. Iloncaie drove them both in on the lone hit of the inning.
The Pointers tacked on two more on a two-RBI double by Mrozinski in the second. Gerber and Rose both singled to set the table.
The Pioneers put up single runs in the second and the third to close to within 5-2. In the fourth, Gerber again was the catalyst for the rally with a leadoff single. Mrozinski drove in the first run of the inning with a groundout after Gerber had stolen third base. Two batters later, Stanicek belted a two-run shot to right-center to up the lead to 8-2.
UWSP got two-run home runs from Carlson and Mrozinski in the fifth to extend the lead to 12-2. UWP got a run back in the bottom of the frame.
In the sixth, singles by
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ), Carlson and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) scored the first run. A wild pitch, Pioneers' error and a sac fly led to two more runs. Another wild pitch pushed the advantage to 16-3.
Stanicek singled with one away in the seventh. Two batters later, Thomka walked and both runners moved up on a passed ball. Carlson followed with a two-run single to complete the 18-3 win.
Starting pitcher
Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) pitched six strong frames. He struck out three and scattered seven hits. Reliever
Zachary Miller (Greendale, Wis./Greendale) tossed a scoreless seventh to secure the win.
Game 2 – UWSP 9, UWP 1
In the top of the first, a one-out walk to Rose, a single by Mrozinski and hit by pitch to Stanicek loaded the bases. Popham picked up a RBI with a walk and Thomka drove in two with a single to give UWSP a 3-0 lead.
The Pointers answered a Pioneers' run in the second with one of their own in the third. A two-out double by Thomka was followed by a RBI single by Carlson.
Rose led off the fourth with a walk. Mrozinski doubled to put two in scoring position. A wild pitch and a single by Iloncaie plated two more.
Rose drove in a run in the fifth and Mrozinski had two more RBI in the seventh to wrap up the 9-1 victory.
Starter
Ben Miller (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) went four innings with a strikeout and just four hits allowed. Reliever
Nathan Mulzer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) pitched the final five innings with eight strikeouts and just one hit against.
The Pointers return home to begin an eight-game home stand with two non-conference games against St. Norbert on Monday (April 17). The Pointers and Green Knights meet at University Field with a 1:00 p.m. first pitch.
