Pointers Track Takes Top Honors in Outdoor Opener

WAUKESHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point track and field teams opened up their outdoor season campaign with a pair of team titles at the Carroll Invite on Saturday.  The women finished in first place with a total event score of 168.50, just 4.5 points ahead of St. Norbert, and the men finished in first with a total event score of 241.
 
Results

On the women's side, Anna Hogan (Omro, WI/Omro) finished in first-place in the triple jump with a distance of 10.67 meters (35' 0.25").  Angela Breunig (Watertown, WI/Watertown) won the pole vault.  Breunig was able to clear the bar at 3.42 meters (11' 2.5").
 
Hannah Mertens (West Bend, WI/Hartford Union) and Abigail Clement finished one-two in the 200-meter dash.  The pair finished with times of 25.91 and 26.38.
 
Isabella Weekly (Plainfield, WI/Tri County), Tatum Houlihan (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH), and Jamie Schmitz (Cashton, Wis./Cashton) dominated the top three spots in the long jump.  The trio finished with distances of 5.39 meters (17' 8.25"), 5.09 (16' 8.50"), and 5.06 (16' 7.35").
 
Briana Simonis (Rosholt, Wis./Rosholt) competed in the high jump finishing in second place with a height of 1.70 meters (5' 7").   Sarah Vils (Mosinee, WI/Mosinee) crossed the finish line with a second-place finish in the 800-meter run with a time of 2:21.26.
 
Kathy Derks (Greenville, WI/Hortonville) finished in third place in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:47.21.  Jacklyn Butler (Oshkosh, WI/West) finished with a time of 66.57 seconds in the 400-meter hurdles, a time good for third place. Emily Schlebecker (Mundelein, IL/Mundelein) finished in third place for the Pointers in the 5,000-meter run with a time of 18:57.51.
 
Alexia Beecher (Black Creek, WI/Shiocton) finished in fourth place in the 100-meter hurdles.  Beecher finished with a time of 16.52. 
 
Karen Wethal (Evansville, WI/Evansville) and Jordan Tyjeski (Beaver Dam, WI/Beaver Dam) finished in fourth and fifth place in the discus.  The pair finished with distances of 41.85 meters (137' 04") and 40.50 meters (132' 10").  
 
Wethal and Tyjeski finished in fifth and sixth place in the shot put with distances of 12.04 meters (39' 6") and 11.97 meters (39' 3.25").  Tyjeski also finished third-place in the hammer throw with a distance of 45.10 meters (147' 11").
 
On the men's side, Jerry Williams (Watertown, WI/Watertown) finished in first place in the 200-meter dash with a time of 22.05.  The NCAA Division III indoor long jump champion finished in first place in the event with a distance of 7.31 meters (23' 11.75").
 
Michael Posanski (Mukwonago, WI/Mukwonago) finished in first place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 16.86 seconds. 
 
Christian Ferguson (Milwaukee, Wis./SCTE) and Brayden Bernhagen (Markesan, Wis./Markesan) finished in first and third place in the high jump.  The pair cleared heights of 2.05 meters (6' 8.75") and 1.95 meters (6' 4.75"). 
 
Michael Pomaville (Dousman, WI/Mukwonago) picked up another first-place finish for the Pointers in the 400-meter hurdles.  Pomaville finished with a time of 56.00.  Teammates Tyler Patoka (Stevens Point, Wis./SPASH) and Zeth Langworthy (Rush City, Minn./Rush City/Minnesota Duluth) finished in third and fourth place with time of 58.73 and 58.76, respectively.
 
Calden Wojt (Marshfield, Wis./Marshfield) won the 400-meter dash with a time of 50.12.  Wojt joined teammates Tanner Akers (Westfield, WI/Westfield), Lee Jepsen (Auburndale, Wis./Auburndale), Michael Von Schledorn (Lomira, Wis./Lomira) in the 4x100-meter relay and the quartet ran a winning time of 42.33 seconds.
    
Matt Stelmasek (Johnsburg, Ill./Johnsburg), Neil Pedersen (Clarendon Hills, IL/Hinsdale Central), and Lukas Johnston finished second through fourth place in the 5,000-meter run.  The trio finished with times just under 15:40. 
 
Nico LaBracke finished in second place in the 1500-meter run with a time of 4:11.59.  Fellow Pointer Eric Zengler (Wausau, WI/West) finished in fourth place with a time of 4:14.00. 
 
Chris Kuehni (Plainfield, Ill./Central) placed second in the pole vault.  Kuehni cleared the bar with a height of 4.12 meters (13' 6.25").
 
Brent Reierson (Watertown, WI/Watertown) made a third-place finish in the shot put.  Reierson finished with a distance of 15.54 meters (51').  He also finished in second place in the javelin throw with a distance of 48.51 meters (159' 02").  Tylar Kohnke (North Fond du Lac, WI/Horace Mann) finished in first place in the javelin with a distance of 51.42 meters (168" 08').     
 
Logan Heil (Weston, WI/DC Everest), Kevin Pettis (Steuben, WI/Prairie du Chien), and Brent Reierson (Watertown, WI/Watertown) dominated the top three spots in the hammer throw.  The trio finished with throws of 52.31 meters (171' 07"), 50.36 meters (165' 10"), and 49.28 meters (161' 08"). 
 
The Pointers travel to La Crosse for the Ashton May Invite on April 8.  The meet is set to begin at 11:00 a.m.
