Pointers Capture WIAC Title, Defeat UW-Eau Claire 3-2

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team captured its second-straight Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Commissioners Cup championship Saturday evening, defeating No. 6/9 UW-Eau Claire, 3-2, at K.B. Willett Arena.

Following a scorless opening period, Ethan Strong (Kinmount, ON) got the Pointers (21-4-3) on the board, with just under five minutes remaining in the middle frame.

The UWSP lead would be short-lived as UW-Eau Claire's (18-7-3) Lucas Kohls scored unassisted to even the game at one apiece entering the final frame.

At the 4:33 mark of the final period, Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) netted his 10th career short-handed goal to put UWSP back on top. Cornellier's goal places him third all-time in program history for career short-handed goals.

With just under five minutes remaining in the third period, Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) extended the Pointers' lead, off assists by Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ) and Mark Bittner (Crookston, MN/Crookston).

With UW-Eau Claire goaltender Jay Deo pulled, Garrett Clement scored to cut the UWSP lead to a single goal, but the Pointers were able to hold on for the final two minutes to capture the WIAC title.

UW-Eau Claire out-shot UWSP, 28-25. Junior goaltender Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made 26 saves for UWSP, while Deo made 22 for the Blugolds.

The NCAA will announce the 2017 NCAA DIII men's ice hockey tournament field on Monday at 9:30 a.m. CST.
