Men's Hockey Falls 6-3 to Adrian in NCAA Quarterfinal

STEVENS POINT, Wis.-Second-ranked UW-Stevens Point fell to No. 6 Adrian, 6-3, on Saturday evening in the quarterfinals of the 2017 NCAA DIII Men's Ice Hockey Championship at K.B. Willett Arena.

Adrian (20-6-2) used a three-goal third period to guide the Bulldogs past UW-Stevens Point (21-5-3) to advance to the semifinals on Friday, March 24, in Utica, N.Y.

Adrian opened the scoring at 6:44 of the first period with a goal by Trevor Boyd.

UW-Stevens Point answered at 7:39 with a goal by Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ) assisted by Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) and Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa ).

With less than a minute remaining in the opening frame, Adrian's Matthew Thompson scored a power-play goal to give the Bulldogs a one-goal advantage entering the second period.

In the second period, Dean Balsamo tallied a goal to put Adrian up 3-1 midway through the stanza.

At the 14:58 mark, Karty found the back of the net to cut into the Adrian lead.

With 20 seconds remaining in the second period, senior forward Kyle Sharkey (Moore, OK/Insight School of Kansas) scored to even the game at 3-3 entering the final period.

At the 6:18 mark of the final period, Boyd scored his second goal of the evening to give Adrian the lead.

Cory Dunn extended the lead for the Bulldogs scoring, assisted by Kyle Brothers, before Austin Hervey scored an empty net goal to seal the Bulldog victory.

UWSP outshot Adrian 42-27. Goaltenders Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) and P.J. Bridges (Waterford, MI) combined for 21 saves for UWSP, while Kevin Entmaa made 39 for Adrian.

UW-Stevens Point finished the season with a 21-5-3 record capturing the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Commissioners Cup and the regular season title.
