AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (4-7) struggled to find offense in an 11-1 seven-inning loss to Benedictine on Thursday. UWSP mustered just four hits, two by
Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale).
Freshman
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) had a hit and drew a walk. He drove in the only run of the game for the Pointers.
Benedictine scored three times in the top of the first inning. Three hits, a walk and a hit batter contributed to the rally. Two singles in the second put another run up for the Eagles.
Ramirez reached on a single with one away in the bottom of the second. An errant pickoff throw allowed him to move all the way to third. Two batters, later Popham singled through the right side to push in the Pointers' lone run of the game.
Benedictine doubled its run total with four tallies in the fourth on four hits and two walks. The Eagles tacked on a run in the fifth and two more in the seventh for the run-rule win.
Following the game with Benedictine, the Pointers and St. Thomas finished the halted game from U.S. Bank Stadium on Feb. 28. In the seventh,
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) and
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) drew consecutive one-out walks. A fielder's choice put runners on the corners.
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) stole second the first run came in as the throw sailed into centerfield. Gerber came in to score on a wild pitch, but UWSP fell, 7-5.
