AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Senior
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) had four hits, including a single in the pivotal ninth inning as the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (5-7) closed out the Florida trip with a 5-4 win over Washington and Jefferson College (W&J) on Friday. Sophomore
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had a pair of hits and drove in two, including the game-winner.
UWSP starter
Ben Miller (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) improved to 2-0 with seven strong innings on the bump. He scattered five hits while striking out two.
The Presidents got a one-out triple in the second followed by a RBI groundout to take a 1-0 lead. W&J added a second run in the third on a pair of hits.
In the sixth inning, the Pointers got the offense going. Rose doubled to begin the inning. Mrozinski replaced him at second with a RBI two-bagger. Gabe Affeldt drew a walk and
Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) reached on a bunt single to load the bases.
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) singled to left to plate the tying run. Thomka grounded to third and the go-ahead run crossed the plate.
The Pointers added to the lead in what would prove to be an instrumental rally.
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) walked with one-down.
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) singled with two away and Rose plated a run with another single. Mrozinski kept the string of two-out hits going with a RBI knock to left-center to give UWSP a 5-2 advantage.
In the bottom of the ninth, W&J got a leadoff single. Two batters later, a walk put two aboard and a single loaded the bases. A fielder's choice and a throwing error allowed two runs to scored. Then the runner at first was caught stealing on a pick-off attempt to end the game for a 5-4 UWSP win.
The Pointers return to Wisconsin for the home opener on Wednesday. UWSP will host Ripon in a twin bill at 1:00 p.m. at University Field.
