Pointers Split on Final Day in Florida

CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (7-11) split a pair of games on the final day of the Pointers trip to Florida.  In the morning game, UWSP led the whole way in a 12-6 win over Union College.  Later in the day, the Pointers dropped a 2-0 decision to Allegheny College.

UWSP clubbed seven doubles in the win over Union.  Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) and Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) had a pair of doubles each and combined to drive in six runs.  Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) also had a double among her three hits while driving in four runs.

Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) and Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) contributed two hits apiece on the day.  Johnson scored twice in the win.

Game 1 – UWSP 12, Union 6
The Pointers hit three-straight doubles with two outs in the first to plate two runs and take the early lead.

In the second inning, a lead off error opened the door for another UWSP rally.  With one away, Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) drew a walk to put two aboard.  Then with two down, Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) slapped a double down the left field line to push home the first run.  Allen followed with her second two-bagger of the game to plate two more runs.

The Pointers built on their lead in the third.  Cohen singled to begin the inning.  Two batters later, Johnson singled and later in the inning, Opdahl drew another walk to load the bases.  Uhlenbrauck doubled with two away clearing the bases for a three-run frame.

Union got on the board in the bottom of the fourth on three singles and a walk to pull within 8-2.

UWSP got a run back in the fifth.  Johnson began the frame with a walk.  Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) singled and Opdahl moved both runners into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt.  Uhlenbrauck singled to drive home her fourth run of the game.

In the sixth inning, Union scored four times on a hit by pitch and four base hits to close the Pointers' lead to 9-6.

In the seventh, Semler was hit by a pitch to start the frame.  Uhlenbrauck singled and Allen singled to load the bases.  Jacobson stepped in a belted her second double of the game to clear the bases and secure the 12-6 win.

Starting pitcher Amelia Heup (Milwaukee, WI/Lutheran) struck out six in 6.0 innings pitched while walking just one.  Maddie Durie (Appleton, WI/East) tossed the final inning, a hitless frame in which she struck out two.

Game 2 – UWSP 0, Allegheny 2
The Gators got three first-inning hits to plate the first run of the game in the top of the first.  Allen singled in the bottom of the inning, but UWSP could not equalize.

Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) tripled with two outs in the second, but the tying run was not scored in the inning.  In the third, Semler was hit by a pitch, Uhlenbrauck walked and Allen walked, but the Pointers left the bases loaded without scoring.

UWSP had a runner aboard in the fourth, fifth, sixth and seventh inning, but were unable to produce a run in any inning.  Allegheny added a run in the seventh to close out the scoring.

Cohen pitched a complete game without walking a batter.  She struck out six while scattering six hits.

The Pointers open conference play at UW-Platteville on April 1 with a doubleheader beginning at 2:00 p.m.
