AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (4-5) suffered identical 6-4 losses in both games of a doubleheader against Southern Maine on Wednesday.
Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) had three hits on the day and scored a run.
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton),
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) and
William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) recorded a hit apiece in each game with each scoring and driving in at least one over the twin bill.
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) drove in three and scored another on the day.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, USM 6
The Huskies scored three unearned runs in the top of the first to jump ahead early.
UWSP chipped away at the lead in the third. Thomka singled with one down. Gerber doubled to put two in scoring position for Rose. He singled up the middle on a 3-2 pitch to plate two and pull the Pointers within one.
In the fifth,
John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) was hit by a pitch with one away. Thomka singled and Gerber was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Rose dropped a suicide squeeze to push the tying run across.
Southern Maine broke the tie with three runs on a pair of walks and two extra-base hits in the eighth.
Mrozinski hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame, his team-leading second of the year. UWSP got the tying runs on base in the ninth, but couldn't get them home in the loss.
Cole Erickson (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) pitched 7.2 innings and suffered his first loss of the season. He struck out five and only three of the runs against were earned.
Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) tossed the final 1.1 without a run allowed.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, USM 6
The Pointers jumped ahead early in game two. Rose was hit by a pitch two batters in and Mrozinski singled to put two on. Iloncaie followed with a double to plate both runs. After moving the third on a wild pitch, he came in to score on a single by
Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) for a 3-0 lead.
Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) drew a leadoff walk in the second. He was moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Thomka. Gerber hit a single to drive in the fourth UWSP run of the game.
Southern Maine got three runs in the third, another in the fourth and broke the tie with two in the sixth.
The Pointers were held hitless over the final seven frames. UWSP did get six runners on via walk or hit by pitch, including a bases loaded situation in the fourth, but could not generate a run.
UWSP will play Benedictine on Thursday at 12:00 p.m. ET. The Pointers will then finish the halted game with St. Thomas from Feb. 28 around 3:00 p.m. ET on Thursday.
