CLERMONT, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (6-10) got back in the win column with a split on day five at the PFX Games in Florida. After dropping an 8-1 decision to Wesleyan, the Pointers held the lead for the final six innings in a 5-3 win over Lawrence.
Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) continued her torrid pace at the plate, registering four hits on the day, including a home run. She drove in two and scored another, plus she added a walk.
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) belted her team-leading third home run of the year. She drove in two, scored twice and had three hits over the twin bill.
Game 1 – UWSP 1, Wesleyan 8
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) walked with one-away in the bottom of the first to start a rally for UWSP. Two batters later, Jacobson doubled to right-center to plate Uhlenbrauck from first for a 1-0 UWSP advantage.
Wesleyan knotted the game up quickly with an unearned run in the top of the second. The Cardinals struck for three more in the third to take a 4-1 lead.
In the fourth inning, Wesleyan scored three more runs on four hits, including a home run to make it 7-1. Another single tally in the fifth accounted for all of the runs in the game.
Jacobson singled in the fourth and Allen singled in the sixth.
Justine Ertl (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) drew a walk in the seventh, but UWSP was not able to string together a rally in any of those innings.
Freshman
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) struck out five in 6.0 innings of work. She allowed three earned runs and walked just one.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, Lawrence 3
Jacobson singled to begin the second inning. Uhlenbrauck put down a sac bunt and reached on a Lawrence error. Then with two outs,
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) singled up the middle to drive home a run.
In the third inning,
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) drew a one-out walk. Allen tripled to right to plate Cooper. Following a Jacobson walk and an Uhlenbrauck walk to load the bases,
Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.I. Case) plated another run with a sacrifice fly.
Lawrence put up single tallies in the third and fourth inning to pull within 3-2.
The Pointers put a jolt into the ball in the fifth. Allen led off with a solo home run to center. Two pitches later, Jacobson slammed a long ball to left to push the lead to 5-2.
The Vikings scored once in the bottom of the fifth, but neither team was able to add to its run total as UWSP held on for the 5-3 win.
Sophomore
Maddie Durie (Appleton, WI/East) pitched five solid innings. She struck out three and scattered five hits. Cohen came on for her first career save with two hitless inning and struck out three.
The Pointers close out the Florida trip with a 9:00 a.m. ET matchup with Union and a 2:00 p.m. ET tilt versus Allegheny.
