Pointers’ Offense Erupts in 13-2 Win over Worcester State

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (4-3) erupted for six runs in the second inning and never looked back in a 13-2 win over Worcester State on Tuesday.
 
Senior Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) went 4-for-4 with a RBI and three runs scored.  Fellow senior Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) added three hits, drove in four and scored twice.  Another senior, Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), scored three times, drove in two, had two hits and drew a walk.
 
Freshman Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) also had a pair of hits with a RBI and a run scored.  Sophomore Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) drove in a pair and scored a run with a hit and a walk on the day.
 
The Pointers second inning began with a Mrozinski walk.  He stole second and moved to third on a single by Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale).  Duddleston followed with a RBI single to put UWSP on the board.  The frame continued with a John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) walk and Thomka singled to drive in another run.   Gerber continued the rally with a two-run single to clear the bases.  He stole second and third and scored on a Rose ground out to cap the six-run inning.
 
Rose singled to start the fifth inning.  After a steal of second, he scored on a double by Mrozinski to build the lead to 7-0.
 
Popham singled with one down in the sixth to start another rally.  Thomka singled and Gerber drew a walk to load the bases.  Rose singled to drive in two.  Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) continued to frame with a RBI single and Mrozinski drove in the fourth of the inning with a sacrifice fly.
 
The Lancers put up single runs in the sixth and the seventh for their lone runs of the game.
 
In the eighth, the Pointers tacked on two more runs to close out the scoring.
 
Junior hurler Beau Zeihen (Portage, Wis./Portage) pitched 6-plus innings and allowed just four hits.  Andrew Holzli (Fort Atkinson, Wis./Fort Atkinson), Tristan Brewer (Grantsburg, Wis./Grantsburg) and Nathan Mulzer (Neenah, Wis./Neenah) each pitched a scoreless inning in relief.
 
UWSP will face Southern Maine in a doubleheader beginning at 12:00 p.m. ET on Wednesday.
