Pointers Tame Oles for Second-Straight Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (3-3) made it back-to-back win as the Pointers defeated St. Olaf, 7-1, on Sunday.

Senior Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) collected three hits, including a double, and drove in two.  Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton), John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) and Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) each contributed a pair of hits, each scoring a run in the win.  Popham and Thomka also each had a RBI.

Junior Ben Miller (Union Grove, Wis./Union Grove) pitched six solid innings for the win.  He struck out three and allowed just a single run against.

Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) started the Pointers' third with a one-out double.  After moving to third on a wild pitch, he came home on a RBI groundout by William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) to push the lead to 3-0.

St. Olaf got on the board in the fourth.  Back-to-back singles put runners on the corners.  The Pointers turned a double play and allowed the run to score.

Rose singled to begin the seventh.  Later in the frame with a runner at second, Iloncaie singled to left to plate a run.  Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) followed with a triple to the gap in right-center to score another and the lead grew to 5-1.

In the eighth, three-consecutive hits, including doubles by Gerber and Rose, added two more runs to the Pointers tally.

Reliever Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) tossed the final two innings without allowing a hit.  He struck out three to halt any comeback attempt.

The Pointers return to the diamond on Tuesday with a 12:30 p.m. ET tilt with Worcester State.
