Stodola Strikes Out Nine as Baseball Takes Down Owls

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (2-3) led wire-to-wire in a 9-3 victory over Westfield State on Saturday.

Sophomore William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) had two of the Pointers five hits.  He drove in four runs and scored another.

Fellow sophomore Alex Stodola (Coleman, Wis./Coleman) started and went 7.0 innings.  He struck out a career-best nine while scattering six hits.

The Pointers jumped out to an early lead.  Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) reached on a four-pitch walk to begin the game.  After stealing second, Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown) put down a sac bunt, but the throw to first was wide allowing Gerber to score.  Two batters later, Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) drew a walk to put two aboard.  Another WSU error loaded the bases.  Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) flew out to left to push home another run.  Then, Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) picked up the lone hit of the frame, a RBI single down the right field line to give UWSP a 3-0 lead.

Mrozinski raced to third for a one-out triple with a gapper to right-center in the bottom of the third.  William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) reached on an infield single to extend the lead to 4-0.

The Owls got on the board in the sixth.  A pair of single with a UWSP throwing error mixed in gave WSU an unearned run to close within 4-1.

WSU tacked on two more in the seventh on a pair of hits.

UWSP turned the offense back on in the bottom of the seventh.  Jordan Carlson (Madison, Wis./Madison La Follette) was hit by a pitch to open the inning. A sac bunt moved pinch runner Gabe Affeldt into scoring position.  A wild pitch and a pair of walks loaded the bases.  Mrozinski drew a third-straight walk to push across the first run of the frame.  Iloncaie came to the plate and cleared the bases with a three-RBI double into the left field corner.  Ramirez capped the five-run inning with a RBI single.

The Pointers will take on St. Olaf on Sunday at 12:00 p.m. ET before a day off on Monday.
