AUBURNDALE, Fla. – The UW-Stevens Point baseball team (1-3) let a pair of early leads slips away in a twinbill swept by No. 18 Ramapo on Friday. In game one, the Pointers fell, 6-4, and in game two, 15-5.
Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) recorded three hits on the day, scoring four times over the two games.
Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) belted a home run among his two hits. He drove in two.
Clint Rose (Watertown, Wis./Watertown),
Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) and
Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) added two hits each.
Game 1 – UWSP 4, RC 6
Gerber, Rose and Stanicek strung together three-consecutive singles to start the game. Stanicek capped the rally with a RBI to put UWSP up 1-0 early.
The Pointers rallied again in the third. Gerber began the frame with a base on balls. He proceeded to steal second and third base. Rose followed with a RBI single down the line past third. After a sacrifice bunt moved Rose into scoring position, Mrozinski moved him to third to put runners on the corners. Will Iloncaie flew out deep to right to plate the second run of the inning.
Ramapo got a run back in the third and another in the fourth following leadoff triples in each frame. The Roadrunners tied the game with a single tally in the fifth and the game stayed knotted until the seventh.
Three singles loaded the bases with just one out. A fourth single in the inning plated two and gave the Roadrunners the lead. An inning-ending double play limited the damage.
Mrozinski led off the eighth inning with a solo home run to left, cutting the deficit to 5-4. In the bottom of the frame, Ramapo answered with a solo homer of its own for the 6-4 final.
Cole Erickson (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) had another strong start, tossing 6.0 innings. He struck out five and scattered six hits.
Game 2 – UWSP 5, RC 15
Gerber began game two with an infield single and promptly stole second. Rose followed with the first of his three walks in the game. Both runners stole to put two in scoring position. Stanicek flew deep to center for the sac fly to put UWSP ahead.
The lead was short-lived as the Roadrunners scored twice in the top of the second, but starter
Derek Kawlewski (Stevens Point, Wis./Pacelli) limited the damage by striking out the side in the frame.
UWSP quickly regained the lead, mostly by the miscues of Ramapo pitching. Two walks, a passed ball followed by a single to load the bases allowed the first run to score on a wild pitch. Another wild pitch and two more walks sandwiched around the third wild pitch of the inning loaded the bases for Mrozinski. His fly to center was deep enough to plate the third run of the inning. Iloncaie capped the four-run frame with a RBI single.
The Roadrunners scored three runs in the third to tie the game at 5-5. The Roadrunners added two in the fourth, four in the fifth and four more in the seventh to put the game out of reach.
The Pointers get right back to work at 9:45 a.m. ET against Westfield State.
