LEESBURG, Fla. – Junior
Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) hit UW-Stevens Point softball team's first home run of the season, a walk-off two-run shot, as the Pointers (3-5) rallied for a 4-3 win in eight innings over Saint Mary's College (Ind.). In game one of the day, UWSP fell to Macalester by an 8-0 score in five innings.
Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook) went 2-for-2 with a walk and a RBI in the win over the Belles.
Game 1 – UWSP 0, Macalester 8 (5 inn.)
Macalester pushed home the first run of the game in the bottom of the first inning on a single, stolen base and a pair of bunts.
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) began the UWSP third inning with a solid single through the right side. After moving into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt,
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) reached on an infield single, but the Pointers were not able to push home the tying run.
The Scots pushed home three runs in the bottom of the third and four more in the fourth.
Justine Ertl (Menomonee Falls, WI/Menomonee Falls) reached on a Macalester error to start the Pointers' fourth. Later in the inning,
Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.I. Case) reached on an infield single, but again UWSP was not able to convert the rally into a run.
Game 2 – UWSP 4, SMC 3 (8 inn.)
The Pointers found themselves in an early hole in game two. The Belles used a pair of singles sandwiched around a sacrifice bunt to take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first.
In the bottom of the second inning, Ertl drilled a double to left-center to lead off. Jacobson singled to right-center to push Ertl home and tie the game.
The Belles jumped back in front in the top of the third with a leadoff single, stolen base and another single.
The game remained a one-run game in favor of Saint Mary's until the bottom of the seventh. Jacobson singled to begin the frame.
Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) pinch ran and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Kitzing.
Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) walked and
Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) singled to load the bases.
Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) grounded to second and the tying run crossed the plate to send the game to extras.
In the top of the eighth, the Belles pushed home a run to go ahead again by one. In the bottom of the inning, the Pointers were down to their last out with the runner placed on second before Allen's heroics.
Freshman
Ashley Cohen (Wheaton, Ill./Glenbard South) pitched all eight innings. She struck out four batters.
The Pointers return to action at 8:00 a.m. ET on Friday against Ripon. UWSP will also play Minnesota-Morris on Friday at 10:30 a.m. ET.
