Baseball Downs Beacons in Extra-Inning Walk-Off Win

AUBURNDALE, Fla. – Freshman Angel Ramirez (Milwaukee, Wis./Greendale) had a pinch-hit walk-off single in the bottom of the 10th inning to propel the UW-Stevens Point baseball team (1-1) to its first win of the year, 6-5, over UMass Boston on Thursday.

Ramirez's single was one of 14 hits on the day for the Pointers.  Sophomore Kyle Mrozinski (Ashwaubenon, Wis./Ashwaubenon) had three hits and scored twice.  Freshman John Popham (Waupaca, Wis./Waupaca ) added a pair of hits while driving in three runs.  Sophomores William Iloncaie (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) and Ryan Stanicek (Loves Park, Ill./Boylan Catholic) each contributed a pair of hits with Iloncaie scoring two runs and Stanicek driving in a run.

Junior Beau Zeihen (Portage, Wis./Portage) took the hill to begin the game and tossed 6.0 innings.  He struck out four.  Drew Spaeth (Stratford, Wis./Stratford) held serve with 3.0 scoreless innings in relief with three more strikeouts.  Senior Heinrich Walder (Rosholt, Wis./Rosholt) pitched a scoreless 10th inning, including a strikeout, for the win.

The Pointers got on the board first in the bottom of the second.  Mrozinski led off with a single.  Iloncaie followed with a double to score the first run.  Later in the inning, Popham hit a RBI grounder to put UWSP ahead, 2-0.

The lead was short-lived as the Beacons plated three runs in the top of the third.  Three singles and a costly UWSP error lead to the three-run frame.

In the bottom of the frame, Ben Gerber (Stoughton, Wis./Stoughton) began the rally with an infield single.  Two batters later, Stanicek muscled a single to center to score Gerber and tie the game.

The Beacons put up single tallies in the fifth and again in the sixth inning to put the Pointers down, 5-3.

In the bottom of the eighth, Mrozinski singled with one away.  He stole second and Tommy Duddleston (Chicago, Ill./De La Salle Institute) drew a walk.  Both runners moved into scoring position on a passed ball.  Popham singled to drive home both runners and tie the game.

Iloncaie started the 10th with a single to center.  After stealing second, he moved to third on a Popham single.  Tyler Thomka (Muskego, Wis./Muskego) was hit by a pitch to load the bases.  That's when Ramirez stepped to the plate and singled for the walk-off win.

UWSP will face No. 17 Ramapo in a doubleheader beginning at 2:30 p.m. ET on Friday.
