Men's Hockey Wins 20th of Season, Advances to WIAC Championship

STEVENS POINT, Wis.- The third-ranked UW-Stevens Point men's hockey team advanced to the Wisconsin Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (WIAC) Commissioner's Cup game after defeating UW-Superior, 8-1, Saturday evening at K.B. Willett Arena. Senior forward Lawrence Cornellier (Machesney Park, IL/Harlem) led the Pointers with a career-high four goals.

At the 2:18 mark of the third period, Cornellier tallied his fourth goal of the evening off an assist by fellow senior Jacob Barber (Dardenne Prairie, MO) to put UW-Stevens Point (20-4-3) up 7-1 over UW-Superior (8-19-2).

Following Cornellier's goal, Austin Kelly (Toledo, OH) tallied a power-play goal 9:45 into the final period, capping the Pointers scoring barrage.

In the first period, Barber kick-started the UWSP offense netting a power-play goal 6:31 into the opening period.

Midway through the opening frame, sophomore forward Tanner Karty (Oklahoma City, OK) put the Pointers up 2-0 off assists by Willem Nong-Lambert (Des Moines, Iowa ) and Logan Fredericks (Millstone Township, NJ).

UW-Superior forward Bruno Birzitis scored at the 15:08 mark of the opening period to put the Yellowjackets within one entering the second period.

With UWSP on the power play, Cornellier netted his first goal of the evening opening up what would be a four-goal second period.

Just 32 seconds later, Karty netted his second goal of the evening giving the Pointers a 4-1 lead early in the second period.

Midway through the second period, Cornellier tallied a power-play goal and a shorthanded goal just 1:32 apart to put UWSP 6-1, before tallying his fourth goal in the third.

UW-Superior outshot the Pointers 45-37. Max Milosek (Lapeer, MI) made a season-high 44 saves for the Pointers, while Kyle Miller and Bryce Fink combined for 29 saves for UW-Superior.

UW-Stevens Point took advantage of the man advantage finishing 4-for-6 on the power play.

With the win against UW-Superior, the Pointers earned their 20th win, marking the programs fourth 20-win season in a row.

The Pointers will return to action next weekend hosting UW-Eau Claire on March 4 for the WIAC Commissioner's Cup Championship game presented by Culver's. Puck drop is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
