Game Recap: Softball |

Jacobson’s Big Day Not Enough as UWSP Swept in Doubleheader

MARQUETTE, Mich. – The UW-Stevens Point softball team (0-2) got an outstanding offensive day from sophomore Jen Jacobson (Bolingbrook, IL/Bolingbrook), but fell in both games on opening day at the Finlandia Dome Classic.  The Pointers dropped game one, 13-4, to Calvin before losing the nightcap, 6-3 to UW-Superior.

Jacobson scorched the ball on opening day to the tune of 6-for-7 (.857) over the twinbill.  She had two doubles, a triple, scored a run and drove in another.

Senior Cori Semler (Hartford, WI/Hartford Union) and sophomore Paige Kitzing (Mount Pleasant, WI/J.J. Case) each recorded three hits.  The duo combined for three doubles and three runs batted in with each scoring a run on the day.

Game 1 – UWSP 4, Calvin 13
The Pointers got on the board in the fourth inning.  Katie Uhlenbrauck (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) drew a one-out walk.  Two batters later, Jacobson singled through the right side to put runners on the corners.  Morgan Johnson (Combined Locks, WI/Kaukauna) drove in the first run of the season with a ground-rule double.

Calvin took the lead in the sixth inning.  The Knights batted around to put a five-spot on the board in the frame.

In the seventh, Calvin sent 12 hitters to the plate and scored eight times to put UWSP down 13-1.

The Pointers didn't give in.  Semler led off the bottom of the seventh with a single.  Sydney Opdahl (Greenfield, WI/Whitnall) drew a walk and Alyssa Cooper (Little Suamico, WI/Bay Port) hit a gourd-rule double to push home a run. Kitzing followed with a double, driving in two more runs.

Game 2 – UWSP 3, UW-Superior 6
The Yellowjackets scored an unearned run in the first inning and again in the fourth inning to take a 2-0 lead.

In the bottom of the fourth, Kitzing led off with a ground-rule double.  Paige Allen (South Elgin, IL/South Elgin) reached on an error that allowed Kitzing to score and pull UWSP within one.  Two batters later, Jacobson singled to drive in the tying run.  Then with two away, Semler doubled to right pushing the go-ahead run across.

The lead was short-lived as back-to-back ground-rule doubles by UWS tied the game at 3-3.  The third ground-rule double of the frame pushed to eventual winning run home and UWS would add another in the inning.

UW-Superior added an insurance run in the seventh, but UWSP was unable to mount a comeback in the second set back of the day.

The Pointers return to action at the Finlandia Dome Classic on Saturday with games against Marian and Northland at 4:00 p.m. and 6:00 p.m. ET, respectively.
