Game Recap: Women's Basketball |

UWSP Comes Alive in Second Half to Blow Past Pioneers

PLATTEVILLE, Wis. – Senior Autumn Hennes (Kaukauna, WI/Kaukauna) powered up for her fifth 20-point game of the season, scoring 12 in the second half as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (17-7, 9-4) earned a 69-55 road win at UW-Platteville (6-18, 2-11) on Wednesday night.

Hennes led all players with 21 points.  Fellow senior Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) added 13 and both Mickey and Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored in double figures with 12 and 10, respectively.

Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored the first four UWSP points and three-straight points by Hennes opened a 9-2 lead early.  Hennes scored four more points in the quarter, but the Pioneers closed to within a point by the end of the first.

Taylor Douglas (Brodhead, WI/Brodhead) and Hennes hit buckets early in the second and Carly Cerrato (De Pere, WI/De Pere) scored at the 5:53 mark, but a 9-0 run by the hosts erased the Pointers' lead.  Anklam hit a bucket later in the quarter to end the run, but UWSP trailed by two at the half.

The Pointers hit five three-pointers and Hennes converted an and-one as UWSP scored 22 in the third quarter.  UWSP's defense also held the Pioneers scoreless for nearly three minutes to extend the lead to 11.

The Rolands each hit a three early in the fourth quarter and junior Taylor Barrett (Monroe, WI/Monroe) scored to put the lead at double digits for good.  Hennes and Lexi Roland (New London, WI/New London) combined for eight-straight UWSP points and a late three by Anklam pushed the lead to a game-high 18 in the win.

The victory, coupled with a UW-Whitewater loss, lifts the Pointers into a tie for second in the WIAC with one game remaining.  The Pointers wrap up the regular season at UW-La Crosse at 3:00 p.m. on Saturday.  A UWSP win or a UW-Whitewater loss on Saturday secures a first round bye and the two-seed for the Pointers in next week's WIAC Tournament.
