LA CROSSE, Wis. – Senior
Lauren Anklam (Ringle, WI/D.C. Everest) recorded her first 20-point output of the year, but her effort was not enough as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (17-8, 9-5) came up short in a 57-51 loss at UW-La Crosse (15-10, 9-5) to close out the regular season.
Junior
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) scored nine points and pulled down a team-high five rebounds.
Payton Mix (New London, WI/New London) had eight and
Katy Heine (Jefferson, WI/Jefferson) grabbed four boards.
Anklam scored UWSP's only four points of the first quarter from the field. At the end of 10 minutes of play, the Pointers trailed 20-7.
In the second quarter, Anklam scored nine more points to help cut into the deficit. Mix scored four points in the final 1:10 and the Pointers got to within seven by halftime.
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) hit a three early in the third quarter, but the Eagles put up six-straight points to run the lead up to 12 by the middle of the quarter. UWSP's defense kicked in and the Pointers closed the final 4:34 of the period on an 8-2 run.
A three-minute drought to open the fourth was ended by a
Mickey Roland (New London, WI/New London) layup in transition. That bucket sparked a seven-point run as the Pointers closed to within three with 3:51 to go. UWSP would not get any closer in a six-point loss.
The Pointers return to Berg Gym on Wednesday to host the first round of the WIAC Championship (presented by Culver's). UWSP will face UW-River Falls at 7:00 p.m.
