GREENCASTLE, Ind. – Senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) tied career bests with 21 points and 13 rounds, respectively, as the UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (6-5) defeated Saint Mary's (Ind.) (2-9) by a 67-48 final to cap the non-conference slate.
Barrett went 8-for-13 from the field to score a game-high 21 points. She grabbed eight rebounds and had three blocks in the win.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led the Pointers with seven defensive rebounds and six on the offensive glass to tie her career mark with 13 in the game.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) both scored in double figures with 13 and 11 points, respectively.
UWSP's three seniors accounted for the first 11 points of the game, but the Belles kept pace at 11-11. Cerrato completed an and-1 as the Pointers held a 14-13 edge after one quarter.
Cerrato buried a three at the beginning and at the end of a 11-0 run as UWSP held Saint Mary's scoreless for nearly six minutes. After back-to-back threes by the Belles, Barrett completed an and-1 to spark sn 8-0 run as the Pointers led 33-26 at the half.
Both teams started slow offensively in the third quarter, but a 9-0 runs by UWSP pushed the lead back to 12 at 44-32.
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) capped a five-point quarter with a bucket in the final minute as the advantage stood at 13 heading to the final quarter.
The Pointers opened the fourth with a 6-2 run with all six points coming from seniors. Barrett extended the lead to 20 with an and-1 with 2:08 to play as UWSP closed out the win.
UWSP opens conference play on Wednesday (Jan. 3) with the first of back-to-back home games to begin 2018. The Pointers face UW-River Falls on Wednesday with tip-off scheduled for 7:00 p.m. at Berg Gym.
