STEVENS POINT, Wis. – Visiting UW-River Falls nailed a three-pointers with less than a minute remaining to end a 5-0 run as the Falcons (10-2, 1-0) held on for a 58-53 win over UW-Stevens Point (6-6, 0-1) in the conference-opener on Wednesday.
Senior
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) pulled down a career-high 15 rebounds and narrowly missed a double-double with nine points. She added four assists and three steals.
Fellow senior
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) led UWSP with 14 points. She had three assists, two steals and two boards.
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) added 13 points with five rebounds and four blocks.
Barrett got the Pointers on the board for an early 2-0 lead and again to knot the game at 5-5.
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) nailed a jumper and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) got a late tip-in, but UWSP trailed 14-11 after one quarter.
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit 3-of-4 free throws and Barrett hit from the floor to pull UWSP within one at 17-16.
Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) scored with 1:32 left in the half and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) gave UWSP a 28-27 lead at the half after a personal 4-0 run.
Two minutes into the third,
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) scored on a put-back to regain the lead at 31-29.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) buried a three as the lead grew to four. After the Falcons tied it up,
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit from deep as UWSP held a 41-39 lead heading to the fourth quarter.
Barrett scored a minute and a half in, but UWRF reeled off six-straight to put the Pointers in a 47-43 hole. Barrett hit a jumper and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) made both free throws as UWSP closed to within one. With just under four minutes to go,
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit a three to tie the game at 51-51. The Falcons scored the next five points, including a three-pointer with just under a minute remaining, to create the game-clinching separation.
UWSP remains at home to face UW-Stout on Saturday at 3:00 p.m. It will be youth day at Berg Gym as all youth 8th grade and younger will be admitted free with a paying adult, which will pay just $3.
