GREENCASTLE, Ind. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (5-5) jumped out to a fast start, but host No. 13 DePauw (11-1) rallied to down the Pointers by a 58-46 score at the Amy Hasbrook Memorial Classic on Friday afternoon.
Senior
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) tied for the team lead with 10 points apiece. Mickey had four assists and grabbed three rebounds. Lexi contributed a rebound and an assist.
Fellow senior
Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) chipped in nine points with four boards and a pair of assists. Sophomore
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) snagged four rebounds and added six points.
The three seniors each scored early as UWSP took a 7-0 lead two minutes into the game. Three and a half minutes later,
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit her second three of the game to put the Pointers up 10-4. The Tigers closed the quarter on an 8-3 run, but the Pointers led 13-12 after one.
Freshman
Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) scored early in the second quarter as UWSP regained the lead at 15-14, but the lead was short-lived as DePauw put up 10-straight. Cerrato nailed a three to end the run, but UWSP trailed by a 24-18 score at the half.
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit from behind the arc to open the third quarter.
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) nailed a three at the mid-point of the quarter to snap a 12-2 run by the Tigers. Barrett completed an and-1 later in the quarter, but the deficit stood at 13 heading to the fourth.
Midway through the fourth, Geier stole the ball on the full-court press and converted a layup to cut the lead to single digits. Cerrato added a three late, but DePauw held on for the win.
UWSP will close out 2017 with a game against Saint Mary's (Ind.) on Saturday at 1:00 pm. Central.
