Game Recap: Men's Basketball |

Pointers Sweep Home Stand with 70-66 Win Over Tommies

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (5-2) never trailed in a 70-66 win over visiting St. Thomas (4-5) to complete a flawless three-game home stand.  UWSP never trailed over the course of the three home games in the stretch.

Junior Brett Tauber (Madison, Wis./Memorial) led UWSP in scoring with 18 points, one shy of his career high.   He had seven rebounds, three blocks and a pair of steals.

Fellow junior Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) also scored in double figures with 14 points.  He was a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line and added four rebounds, two assists and a steal.

MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) put the Pointers in front in the opening minute and a Tauber basket ended a 6-1 run to open the game.  Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) buried three-pointer and Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) extended the lead to 11-3 four and a half minutes in.

With just over seven minutes left in the half, Brandon Spray (Prairie Du Sac, Wis./Sauk Prairie) hit a bucket and Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) drilled a three to push the lead back to seven.  Minutes later, Koerner nailed another three and Tauber had four points down the stretch as UWSP led by nine at the half.

Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) and Tauber scored on consecutive possessions to begin the second half.  The Tommies put up a 13-3 run over the next five minutes to close within three.  Spray ended the run with a three for UWSP and Dodge followed with two free throws to push the lead back to eight.

St. Thomas put up another run, 16-7, late in the second half to close to within 57-56 with 3:24 to go.  Dodge was fouled shooting a three and hit all three free throws to cushion the lead.  Tauber scored four-straight points and the lead grew back to six.  In the closing seconds, Delmore scored a layup to seal the win.

The Pointers travel to Madison to face Edgewood on Thursday at 8:00 p.m. in the first game of a back-to-back.  The following night (Dec. 22), UWSP will play Augustana in Wisconsin Dells at 7:00 p.m.
