STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point men's basketball team (4-2) led from wire-to-wire in a 73-56 victory over Lawrence (5-3) on Wednesday night at Quandt Fieldhouse.
Senior
MJ Delmore (Wisconsin Dells, Wis./Wisconsin Dells) led UWSP with 13 points in the win. He added two assists, two steals and had a pair of rebounds.
Mark Nelson (Madison, Wis./Monona Grove) also scored in double figures with 11 points. He led UWSP with seven rebounds and dished out a pair of assists.
Sophomore
Matt Koerner (West Bend, Wis./West) earned his first career start and had a career-best nine points.
Drew Fredrickson (Mount Horeb, Wis./Mount Horeb) and
Blake Ehrke (Deerfield, Wis./Deerfield) poured in eight points each.
Delmore hit a three in the opening minute and the Pointers got back-to-back buckets from Nelson to open an 8-3 lead.
Canon O'Heron (Bangor, Wis./Bangor) and Delmore scored on consecutive possessions as the lead grew to nine at 15-6.
Later in the half,
Aaron Knez (Chippewa Falls, Wis./Chippewa Falls) drilled a three-pointer to extend the lead to 13. Down the stretch, UWSP hit all six free throws and held an 11-point lead at the half despite a more than three-minute drought from the field.
Delmore and Fredrickson combined for the first sevens UWSP points of the second half as the lead remained in double digits.
Nate Dodge (East Troy, Wis./East Troy) got on the board nearly five minutes into the second half with a three-pointer, his only points of the game.
Midway through the second half, Koerner scored five-consecutive points for the Pointers for a 58-46 lead. UWSP's defense took over as the Vikings went 0-for-9 over the final seven and a half minutes of play.
The Pointers conclude the home stand and the home portion of the non-conference slate on Saturday (Dec 16) against St. Thomas at 7:00 p.m.
