St. Thomas Too Much for Pointers in Home Loss

STEVENS POINT, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-3) suffered a 78-54 defeat at the hands of visiting No. 11 St. Thomas (3-1) on Friday night.
 
Senior Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored 13 points to lead the Pointers, two shy of tying her career high.  Freshman Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) added 10 points and topped UWSP with four steals and four rebounds. 
 
UWSP converted 19 free throws in the game with Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) and Geier combining to go 10-for-10 from the charity stripe.  The Tommies shot 52.6 percent from the field while holding UWSP to just 33.3 percent shooting.
 
Geier and Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored on back-to-back possessions to open the game giving UWSP a slight advantage with both baskets.  Later in the quarter, Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) put the Pointers ahead and Bailee Collins (Milton, Wis./Milton) converted a pair of free throws to give UWSP its largest lead of the game at 11-7.
 
Early in the second quarter, Ashley Leiterman (Morrison, Wis./Denmark) pulled the Pointers within two at 19-17.  UST used an 11-3 run to separate and extend the lead to 10 at 30-20.  Taylor Barrett (Monroe, Wis./Monroe) ended the run with a bucket but the Pointers trailed 34-22 at the half.
 
Lexi Roland (New London, Wis./New London) scored UWSP's first four points of the third quarter, but St. Thomas answered each basket to build the lead to 19.  Geier added four points later in the period to cut the deficit to 13 and a pair of free throws by Erin Moran (Naperville, Ill./Naperville Central) shaved the lead to 12.  The Tommies closed the quarter with an 8-3 run to go up 17 entering the fourth.
 
St. Thomas continued to add to the lead with an 11-4 run to begin the fourth.  Geier and Collins hit from the field and UWSP's other eight points in the quarter came at the free throw line.
 
The Pointers have 10 days off before returning to action on Monday, Dec. 11 with a 6:00 p.m. tip-off at North Central in Naperville, Ill.
