KENOSHA, Wis. – The UW-Stevens Point women's basketball team (3-2) got off to a slow start and were unable to recover in a 67-49 loss at Carthage (4-1) on Wednesday night.
Freshman
Kellan Schmidt (Edgerton, Wis./Edgerton) led UWSP in scoring with 10 points, the lone Pointer in double figures. Fellow freshmen
Brooke Geier (Kewaunee, Wis./Kewaunee) and
Taylor Greenheck (Sauk Prairie, Wis./Sauk Prairie) scored eight and seven points, respectively. Geier topped the Pointers with seven rebounds and four assists.
Carthage jumped out to an 8-0 lead with the early momentum in the Lady Reds' home opener. Schmidt took the lid off the UWSP basket to begin an 8-2 run for the Pointers to pull within 10-8.
Carly Cerrato (De Pere, Wis./De Pere) hit a pair of free throws as the Pointers trailed 15-10 after one quarter.
After two more Cerrato free throws and a Geier layup to begin the second quarter, UWSP suffered through another 8-0 run by Carthage to fall behind 28-14. Greenheck and
Mickey Roland (New London, Wis./New London) hit three-pointers on back-to-back possessions late in the half, but Carthage took a 39-24 lead into the locker room.
Geier hit a pair of buckets in the third quarter, but the Lady Reds continued to pour it on taking a 54-30 lead. Greenheck ended a drought with the only other field goal of the quarter at the 2:24 mark.
Three minutes into the fourth quarter, Geier hit a basket to spark a 13-2 run for the Pointers, but the deficit was too much to overcome.
The Pointers return home on Friday (Dec. 1) to face No. 11 St. Thomas at Berg Gym. Tip-off is slated for 5:00 p.m. and fans will receive a free rally towel courtesy of Skyward, while supplies last.
